San Antonio Group Therapy & Counseling

At first, the thought of group therapy can seem overwhelming. How do you open up to others? What about confidentiality? Will I be judged for not being as far along as others? These concerns can make group therapy become less of an option for clients. However, having a group with similar circumstances can bring a new perspective to your healing process. While group therapy may not be used in all treatment plans, it is a practice that has many benefits.

What is Group Therapy?

Group Therapy is a psychotherapy practice that includes one or more therapists that lead a group of patients through weekly or biweekly sessions. While privacy may be a concern, we ensure all members commit to confidentiality at the beginning of the process. Traditionally, these sessions target specific issues such as depression, grief and wellness, and TMS support.

During these sessions, clients can speak openly about their circumstances and the tools that have helped them along their journey. Since life is not meant to be done alone, our goal in group therapy sessions is to help patients develop a safe community for healing.

Other types of group therapy we offer include:

The Benefits of Group Therapy

Just as our traditional counseling services aim to provide you with hope and healing on your mental wellness journey, group counseling does the same. Even with a larger setting, we still keep you at the center with a safe and open space to express your concerns. Group counseling can be a sounding board to help you find community and hope. As you talk and listen, you can find new techniques you may want to implement in your own treatment plan.

During these sessions, clients can speak openly about their circumstances and the tools that have helped them along their journey. Since life is not meant to be done alone, our goal in group therapy sessions is to help patients develop a safe community for healing.

TMS Support:

TMS Support Group is open to any patients who are either a prior or present TMS patient here at Genesis. The purpose of the group is to build community within the TMS patients as they journey through the 6 weeks of TMS. This group is a closed group meaning that you need to join the 6-week group by the second meeting. The reason for this being a closed group is to allow the people in the group to build community and feel comfortable sharing each week. The 6-week group is designed to fill the patient’s toolboxes with coping skills in order to deal with outside stressors of life. A lot of the time TMS does scientifically what it needs to do in order to get the patients feeling better however, every patient still goes home to the same external stressors. This group allows a space to learn counseling coping skills in order to prevent relapse and start building a healthier lifestyle.

Grief Group:

After the loss of a loved one, we experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions. The ever-changing emotions can catch us off guard, causing us to act out of character or differently than our typical personality or demeanor. The purpose of this group is to allow us space for process and support – to help us move through our grief journey and more towards healing. This is a closed group, meaning that you need to join the 8-week group by the second meeting. By keeping the group closed, we allow the people in this group to build a community and feel comfortable sharing each week. If grief has impacted you or is continuing to impact you, this can be a group for you in order to build up support and work through the tasks of mourning with people who understand what it is like to lose someone important to them.
