Our Founders
Genesis was founded in 1990 under Dr. Ira Tunnell and was originally named Genesis Treatment Center. Dr. Edmund P. “Ted” Williams joined Genesis in 1996, and 2001 founded Northwoods Center which eventually merged with Genesis in 2002.
So why the name “Genesis”? We chose the name because it means, “New birth or new beginning,” and we believe healing is its own kind of new birth. We believe God creates all kinds of new beginnings. Healing, in a way, is a restoration. It is health without illness.
Dr. Williams began his medical practice as a family doctor, but after seeing mental illness impact his own family, he became interested in helping people heal through psychiatry. Interested in the relational aspect of psychiatry, he felt satisfaction in helping those who were hurting. He felt he could be in a better position to help others if he returned to school to study psychiatry. He believes the treatment plan should take biology, psychology, social, and spiritual aspects into account as well.
Dr. William’s vision of incorporating an integrated approach to psychiatry and TMS therapy was put into place in 2017 when therapy was added to our line of services. Dr. Williams believes in an integrated approach to healing because we understand mental illness through the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. The multidisciplinary approach just seems like common sense, even if that isn’t the normal approach. It’s not easily done, but we have found a way to do it at Genesis. As a result of this growth, Genesis expanded and moved to a new location in San Antonio in November 2018.
